UPDATE: 3/11/24
New York State Department of Health and Education Department are following the updated CDC guidance released on March 1, 2024 for COVID-19 prevention which is now part of the CDC Respiratory Virus Guidance. The Respiratory Virus Guidance includes common respiratory viral infections such as influenza, COVID-19, and RSV. The CDC recommends people stay home and away from others when sick with a respiratory virus and suggests returning to normal activities when symptoms are improving for at least 24 hours, and fever free without antipyretics, such as Tylenol and Advil/Motrin. Once resuming normal activities, people are encouraged to take additional steps for the next five days to curb spread, such as wearing a well-fitting mask, keeping a distance from others and enhancing hygiene practices.
Additional information can be found under From the Nurse - Respiratory Virus Guidance. These requirements may change as we must comply with the New York State Department of Health and Suffolk County Department of Health.
Along with caring for the daily injuries and illnesses, as the school nurse some of my responsibilities include monitoring absences and communicable diseases, administering medication (as ordered by a healthcare provider), completing state mandated screenings, and providing sports clearance for our intramural and middle school sports program.
