Fr. John Sureau, Ph.D., LCSW - Principal/Executive Pastor

Fr. John Sureau became the Principal at OLQA in August of 2018.  This ministry brings him back, in some way, to his former life as a Catholic high school leader for many years.

Fr. John has served as the Executive Pastor of Our Lady Queen of Apostles since 2016 since being appointed Pastor of St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Center Moriches.

Ordained by Bishop Murphy on December 3, 2011, Fr. John began his priestly ministry at the Parish of the Holy Cross in Nesconset.  Fr. John served as a deacon at St. Anne’s Church in Garden City, NY from June 2011 to December 2011. In June 2011, he was appointed Associate Pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Lindenhurst.

Fr. John is originally from West Islip.  He was born and raised there, attending Our Lady of Lourdes School and St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School.  After graduation from high school, Fr. John attended St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue and continued his education at SUNY Stonybrook (1997-1999), the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington (1999-2003), the Graduate School of Social Service at Fordham University (2003-2005) and the Graduate School of Education at Fordham University (2005-2012) where he earned his Ph.D. in Educational Administration. Fr. John holds additional degrees in Education, Theology, and Social Work.  He is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW).

Prior to entering the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception as a seminarian, Fr. John served as a campus minister, social worker and teacher at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School (1995-2009) and as the Coordinator of Worship at Our Lady of Lourdes R.C. Church in West Islip (2001-2009).  Additionally, he worked as social worker at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip (2005-2011).   Since 2005, Fr. John has been a social worker at Hope House Ministries, working primarily with young people and their families impacted by addiction.

In addition to his primary work and ministry here, Fr. John continues to offer his time at Hope House and assists the Office of Prison Ministry in the Diocese of Rockville Centre.  In 2012, Fr. John was appointed by Bishop Murphy to chair the Public Policy Advisory Committee, advising the bishop on important public policy and social issues.  This position concluded in 2015.  He assists a team of priests offering parish missions, has offered talks, reflections and days of prayer throughout the state and has written articles for various education journals.  Fr. John is bilingual, speaking and celebrating the sacraments in English and Spanish (with a lot of practice!).
